Because an important purpose of bEQ is to recognize owners who have chosen to optimize their buildings' energy performance, the program has to ensure that individuals who evaluate actual energy performance of existing facilities and who predict energy performance of new facilities are fully competent professionals.

To earn an In Operation rating for an existing building, building owners must engage the services of professionals who have earned the ASHRAE-Certified Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) designation to verify indoor environment quality conditions, use utility bills and other documentation to calculate the building's energy usage and highlight potential energy conservation measures.

Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP)

ASHRAE has developed the Building Energy Assessment Professional (BEAP) certification program in collaboration with representatives from ASHRAE’s Building Energy Quotient (bEQ) program, IESNA, NIBS, SMACNA, and TABB.

The purpose of this program is to certify individuals’ ability to audit and analyze residential, commercial, and industrial buildings including determining project scope, collecting data, analyzing building performance, interpreting results, evaluating alternatives, submitting recommendations for energy conservation measures, and assisting with the implementation of these recommendations.

The BEAP examination is $295 for ASHRAE members and $415 for non-members.

Steps for earning a certification

  1. Read the Guidebook. The Guidebook contains important information related to the examination eligibility requirements, and available resources for the BEAP program.
  2. Complete the Application.
  3. After ASHRAE approves your application, you will receive information about how to register for the BEAP examination at a testing center worldwide.
